Now Is the Time to Think About OSHA's Top 10

OSHA’s Top 10 most-cited violations for fiscal year 2018 were recently released at the 2018 National Safety Council Congress & Expo with few surprises. Here is the list:

  • Fall Protection – General Requirements (1926.501): 7,270 violations
  • Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 4,552
  • Scaffolding (1926.451): 3,336
  • Respiratory Protection (1910.134): 3,118
  • Lockout/Tagout (1910.147): 2,944
  • Ladders (1926.1053): 2,812
  • Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178): 2,294
  • Fall Protection – Training Requirements (1926.503): 1,982
  • Machine Guarding (1910.212): 1,972
  • Eye and Face Protection (1926.102): 1,536

As you review your current safety program, take some extra time to consider the entries on the “top 10” list that pertain to your business. Then, ask yourself some hard questions:

  • Does this issue affect our workplace?
  • Do we have this safety threat under control?
  • Are we in compliance with OSHA regulations?
  • Have workers received adequate training?
  • Do we have a program in place to identify hazards before an accident can occur?

If an OSHA compliance officer showed up at your door tomorrow, would you pass inspection? Hopefully, the answer is a resounding “yes.” If you’re “not sure,” it’s time to get to work.
