For fire to exist, four elements must be present at the same time: 1) oxygen to sustain combustion, 2) heat to raise the material to its ignition temperature, 3) fuel or a combustible material and 4) the chemical reaction that is fire. Portable fire extinguishers apply an extinguishing agent that either cools the burning fuel, displaces or removes the oxygen, or stops the chemical reaction so the fire cannot burn.
